This section is intended for Iowa Genealogical Society volunteers. Information can be found here regarding volunteer activities, IGS schedules, training, etc.
Volunteer Opportunities
We are a volunteer-based organization and always welcome assistance. We have a variety of tasks and activities for you to choose from. No prior experience is required. You get to pick how little or how much time you can help. Some opportunities can be as short as 30 minutes, while others can be longer if you choose. You can also choose what you want to do. We welcome your expertise and ideas. There is something for everyone at IGS.
These are only some of the many volunteer opportunities available.
Front Desk Attendant
This position is the best way to meet people and discuss your favorite research subject. The main focus is greeting members and visitors, answering the phone, and taking messages. Full training is provided. Other tasks include using the cash register and registering members for classes. Shifts can be as short as one or two hours, so it’s perfect if you are planning to research at the library anyway.
Library Helper
Assist the librarian on a task basis. This may include dusting shelves, looking through stacks for misfiled books, reshelving books, and more. This position is perfect for all of us who love books and/or who wanted to be a librarian while growing up. Flexible hours and a pleasant work environment. Training is available. Come join in the fun.
Scanning Projects
Use IGS scanners to scan funeral and Bible records, family files, and other material in our collection. Flexible hours and training are available; computer knowledge is helpful.
Data Entry
We have many large and small data entry projects to choose from. These can be done at the library or at home on your own computer. Even if you only have one or two hours a week, we can use your help.
Cleaning
Do you like to put on your headphones and clean? Tasks include vacuuming, cleaning bathrooms or the kitchen, and sweeping or mopping the floors. You can pick your time slot and tasks too. Perfect for listening to your favorite music or podcast.
Lawn Care
Do you prefer to work outside? Mowing, weeding, and as-needed tasks are available.
Event Help
Set-up and tear-down are always needed for classes and in-person events. If you are signed up for a class and want to come in a little early to help, just let us know. It’s a great way to meet new people and pick up research ideas.
Publication Submission Committee
Do you enjoy writing or have an idea for an article? We welcome submissions for our IGS publications. Email a one-paragraph article description to:
igs@iowagenealogy.org
Attn: Publication Committee
All ideas will be reviewed by the editors, and you will be contacted regarding any needed details for your full article. Out-of-state members are encouraged to submit ideas.
Note
All volunteer opportunities are flexible. You are welcome to try several tasks to find a good fit. Whether you have 30 minutes occasionally, one or two hours a week, or more time to give, we would love to have you. If you are unable to come to the library, some volunteer opportunities may be completed from home.
For more information or to sign up, call our front desk at 515-276-0287 or send us an email at igs@iowagenealogy.org.
