Share your ancestral couple’s special story and help raise funds for IGS.
Applications are being accepted now through April 30th to reserve display space. Space is limited, so don’t delay. There is no charge for members to exhibit their heirlooms.
Third IGS Heritage Quilt Show “What’s In A Name, and Other Quilt Tales”

Recently a magazine asked their readers what their top five things are to collect. Crocks were number one. Quilts/coverlets were number two with that group. I think, with genealogists, they would be number one!
These items were brought with our immigrant ancestors, and also comforted families on the pioneer’s long overland trails to the West.
Quilts pieced together during the Civil War era served many purposes. Many were sent with the soldiers, many were made for the injured in hospitals and many more were made as fund raisers for the charities assisting the widows and orphans of that war.
Today quilts are cherished by those who own them. If you are one of those persons, we would hope you are willing to join our exhibit at the Third IGS Heritage Quilt Show “What’s In A Name, and Other Quilt Tales” to be held October 12 & 13, 19 & 20, 2012.
Quilts or coverings must have been made by an ancestor of an IGS member/family. There will be an admission charge to see the show, but not to display any items. The show will feature quilts from many eras, not just Civil War quilts.

IGS is requesting your gently-used-but-no-longer-needed items for a silent auction that will be held in conjunction with the April 14 Spring Technology Conference. Your donation helps IGS!
Resource books, gift cards, quilts, (no junk, please) can mean $$$ for genealogy. Donations can be brought to IGS.
This beautiful teapot and four plates and the quality Longaberger baskets have already arrived.
The Save our Face campaign is not yet complete; we are six thousand dollars short of meeting our obligation for 25% of construction costs. Why should you contribute? To make an investment for future generations to whom we will pass on the Society and its assets. The contractors are outpacing our fundraising campaign. Please consider helping IGS achieve its goal whether your gift is large or small.
Upon completion of the project, the buildings which compose the Society’s home will be worth $925,000; nearly a dollar-for-dollar return on the repairs. The location is ideal for researchers—the Iowa Historical Society Library and State Archives are located directly across the street. Park at IGS, check in at the librarian’s desk, then treat yourself to research at both facilities.
Our location at the edge of the historical East Village enhances the future value of the Society’s property. If everyone who has not contributed sent in $10, we would meet our obligation and goal.
In January or February, the names of the contributors will be published in the newsletter and if that list were a majority of our members it would send a real message to our banker and future grantors that we as a Society are a good investment and worthy of their support.
Every dollar raised is important and deeply appreciated.

We are still holding our breath and praying that the building repairs will be completed before the weather calls a halt. Two-thirds of the facility’s south wall has been repaired and Two Rivers Glass is working to re-install the framework and glass panels on that area. That work is very exacting to insure that the framework will support the ¼ inch thick glass panels.
We almost had a hold-up until the end of December for needed clips for the top frame cover. The manufacturer’s factory was flooded out this year, but their recovery is faster than anticipated and the clips will be delivered in late October.
The construction costs will be $2,000-$3,000 dollars more than anticipated. The old parapet cover is too damaged to be reused. The parapet cover is critical in keeping moisture out of the many holes that have been drilled into the parapet (the part of the external wall that rises above the flat roof) over the years. Duerson Roofing is the contractor and we were able to pick a royal blue color close to IGS’s blue to give the building our brand.
Donations are coming in as members can fit a donation into their budget. IGS still needs close to $9,000 to complete the 25% of costs required by the terms of the mortgage refinancing.
Individuals, IGS Chapters and IGS Special Interest Groups are invited to support the Saving Face capital campaign and help preserve Iowa’s premier family history library. Donations received to date total $23,000.00.

Thanks to those of you who have donated to the “Saving Face” campaign, IGS is inching toward its fundraising goal and our contractors have begun work to repair the first one-third of the facility’s front walls. You can see pictures of the progress on FACEBOOK and on this website.
IGS members who attended FGS conference in Springfield met our fall conference speaker, Billie Stone Fogarty and were very impressed. One member who had not intended to attend our fall conference has signed up and encouraged others not to miss the opportunity to learn from a nationally recognized speaker at a bargain price.
Please don’t make the mistake that some did two years ago when they dismissed any interest in coal mining and missed the wealth of learning from Tim Pinnick on a wide range of other segments.
With rising costs, future two day annual conferences will be closer to $100; take advantage of this year’s bargain price to expand your knowledge and learn from an expert. Friday’s lunch will be from Jason’s Deli.
Greetings IGS Members & Friends,
It’s been an eventful spring and summer with structural engineers, contractor bids, lots of meetings with IGS officers and our Board of Directors, and several meetings with our banker. We have a facility that is well worth repairing; it is structurally sound with off-street parking and an ideal location in the East Village of Des Moines. Our location across the street from the Iowa State Historical Library and our earlier hours make for convenient one-stop researching for members. It also brings in many out-of-state travelers who stop in to look us over and stay to research in the IGS library. More than a few have become members and make return visits to IGS.
The Iowa Genealogical Society library facility’s front wall has sustained damage not covered by insurance. The remainder of the structure is in good repair with a new roof, new siding on the north and an HVAC system only eight years old.
Unfortunately our “face structure” needs a “face lift” to restore sound construction and weather proofing. The south wall of the building needs to be completely replaced and the glass panel wall covering it removed and rebuilt to today’s standards.
Two firms would be involved in the project, one to replace the underlying wall and another specialized contractor to restore the glass wall. The total cost of the project is $115,000.
Subject to an appraisal, State Savings Bank has agreed to a construction loan to cover the time needed for fundraising and any shortfall in fundraising. Payments on the construction loan will be in addition to our regular monthly mortgage payment.
IGS has one of the few buildings in the East Village with off-street parking and it is conveniently located across the street from the Iowa Historical Museum with its State Library and Archives. Your donation will help rebuild a weatherproof, structurally sound “face” for genealogy research.
With a goal of raising $115,000, the “Saving Face” campaign is off and running. Donations received to date total $10,900—a great beginning!
Individuals, IGS Chapters and IGS Special Interest Groups are invited to support the campaign and help preserve Iowa’s premier family history library. Send your tax-deductible contribution to: Iowa Genealogical Society, Saving Face Campaign, 628 East Grand Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa 50309-1924.
