The Hamilton County Heritage Hunters Genealogical Society is planning for a busy year of activities including town parades, workshops and on-going projects. Some on-going projects include: collecting vital information (birth, death, wedding, etc) from local county newspapers; walking and photographing headstones at all county cemeteries; answering queries; identifying and donating research material in memory of deceased members; and indexing old county tax records. We have established a Hamilton County Pioneer Certificate to honor our pioneers living in Hamilton County before 1900.

A committee has designed a float to participate in five town celebrations as well as the Hamilton County Fair parade. A spring and fall workshop is scheduled. We will be presenting a class in March at the Stanhope Public Library on “Beginning Genealogy.”  The Hamilton Heritage Hunters will have a display booth at the Hamilton County fair and the Webster City Heritage Day celebration.

Hamilton Heritage Hunters meet on the fourth Saturday (January through March) at 1:30 p.m. and on the fourth Tuesday (April through November) at 6:00 p.m. Meetings are held at the Kendall Young Library, 1201 Wilson Ave, Webster City, Iowa 50595.

The next meeting of the Clayton County Genealogical Society will be held Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at Elkader Public Library. This meeting and special speaker were postponed from February 28th.

The special speaker will be Larry Lerch, of Elkader, who is a railroad historian. He is a very active member of the Milwaukee Railroad Historical Society. Besides a great many pictures in regard to railroads, he will also discuss a desire to have a railroad museum, possibly in Elkader, as a compliment to the Rural History Museum. This would be in the park area by the Elkader swimming pool and campgrounds, if this comes to fruition.

The meeting will begin at 1:00 pm. Everyone is welcome to attend this free presentation. AND, if you have any pictures or history regarding railroad, please feel free to bring them to share!

The Clayton County Genealogical Society met January 24, 2012 at the Elkader Public Library, with Frank Phippen of Elkader, who gave a presentation on “Remembering our Veterans on Memorial Day – but sometimes you have to find them first!”

Mr. Phippen has been an Elkader East Side Cemetery Board member for over seventeen years. His one goal is to have all Clayton Civil War soldiers’ graves marked with a Veteran metal flag holder. He has accomplished this in six cemeteries in Clayton County, so far. He is also researching on all other war soldiers who fought in any of our USA wars/conflicts. His comment, several times, is that “one thing leads to another!” The metal flag holders are free through Veterans Affairs. Clayton County does have a Veterans Affairs Department, and Clayton County donates $5.00/year for each Veteran’s grave care.
