Section I: History and Geography

 

History

 

From 1837-1851 Carroll county was part of Benton, which then included all the territory between it’s northern and southern lines extending to the Missouri River.  In 1851 Carroll County was established and attached to Polk, and two years later attached to Shelby.  The settlement of the county had not yet begun and was still home to Indians. 

 

The first settlement was in Glidden Township in 1854.  In 1855 the county was attached to Guthrie County.  Carroll County was organized January 1, 1856.  Carroll County was named after Charles Carroll of Carrollton, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.

 

Boundaries

 

Carroll County is located in west central Iowa.  It is surrounded by the following counties: West – Crawford Co.; NW – Sac Co.; NE – Calhoun Co.; East – Greene Co.; and SE – Guthrie Co.; SW Audubon Co.
